Record for the Longest Jump on Roller Skates

The record for the longest jump on roller skates has been held for nearly a decade. Jeff Dupont (also referred to as the “Speed Dealer”) from the United States completed the longest jump on roller skates on February 12, 2012. He went 6.18 meters (equivalent to 20 feet and 3.36 inches). The jump was completed at the Willamalane Centre for Sports in Springfield Oregon. The jump was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. While he was permitted to run up before he jumped, a ramp is not allowed. Therefore, it was the longest unassisted jump on skates.

Training Tips for Jumping on Roller Skates

If you just got your skates and are ready to start training, take things slow. Learning how to move forward, safely stop, and balance on your skates are all necessary prerequisites before you begin training to long jump on your skates. When you have mastered the basic skating skills, you are likely ready to get started on trying more tricks like jumping.

The first step in getting used to jumping on your skates is to take small jumps as you slowly skate around. Simply put, jumping on roller skates is a balance of hopping up and regaining your center of balance as you come down. As you master moving up and down at a very slow speed, you can work on jumping higher and staying in the air for longer. Below are some helpful tips as you navigate the process.

Equipment:

This may be the most important tip when it comes to mastering roller skating tricks. You need a quality pair of inline skates that fit properly and provide support for your ankles. If you are a real beginner when it comes to skating you should also get some protective gear. A helmet, knee pads, and handguards may help as you navigate the learning process.

Level of Speed:

As you begin to skate faster, find a good speed as this can help effectively propel you. You’ll want to maintain a speed where you feel in control, balanced, and stable before you jump. It’s best to skate with your knees slightly bent (similar to a squat) so you can use your leg strength to propel you off the ground. Bending your knees can also help absorb the impact once you come down from the jump.

Parallel Position:

As you are gliding along, remember that just before you jump, you should have your skates parallel to one another. It’s helpful to begin your jump with your skates in a parallel position because it reduces the risk of injury once you come down. You should also face the area where you want to jump so your whole body is going in one direction.

Arm Position:

As you jump, you can bring your arms up to help propel you. Once you come down from your jump, it’s helpful to put your arms out to your side. This can help you regain your balance after your landing. You should also engage your core during this process as it can help keep your body in control.
